Second Opportunity for Success ®

Lena Pope offers the Second Opportunity for Success® Program, formerly known as the First Offender Program, for youth that have found themselves involved with the juvenile justice system and have no previous record of law violation. This program has been extremely successful. Last year, 93% of youth who completed the program did not have another criminal violation for six months. Second Opportunity for Success® has been recognized nationally for its ability to prevent future criminal behavior in youth.

In Second Opportunity for Success®, youth and families learn valuable skills to improve their relationships, their school performance, and their behavior. For seven weeks, youth and their families attend small groups. During small group sessions, the students learn topics such as:

  • Building Family Relationships
  • Self-Esteem
  • Peer Pressure
  • Social Skills
  • Decision Making
  • Substance Abuse/STD Awareness

The parents also attend classes that cover:

  • Family Unity
  • Clear Messages
  • Consequences
  • Decision Making
  • Social Skills
  • Self-Control and Corrective Teaching
  • Building Relationships

These small group sessions allow the students to build their own skill set while the parents are also receiving focused attention. The group topics are based on proven methods of preventing youth criminal behavior. These classes are effective, because they involve both youth and parents.

Once this foundation has been set through the parent and student classes, the students enter a three-month probationary period where they are given support through a Family Specialist. The Family Specialist will discuss the progress or regression that the student may be experiencing and offers guidance to the family. After the probationary period has expired, the student has the opportunity to have their charges dropped if they did not commit another crime.

Second Opportunity for Success® is available in both English and Spanish.

Although Second Opportunity for Success® receives its participants by referral from local police, Lena Pope also offers family services that are open to the public. For more information about our counseling, click here
